Israeli ambassador in Rome summoned by FM over inappropriate statements against Syria
Syria-Israel, Politics, 2/22/2002

The Italian foreign ministry has informed the Israeli ambassador in Rome that his recent statements against Syria are inappropriate by an Israeli diplomat accredited in Italy at a time when an official visit is being paid by the Syrian President Bashar al- Assad to Italy.

The director general of the Mediterranean and the Middle East at the Italian foreign ministry said that the Italian foreign ministry has summoned Israel's ambassador in Rome Ehud Ghoule and stressed that due to the current sensitive conditions the Middle East is passing, Ghoule's statements do not contribute to the dialogue which Italy relentlessly seeks to give a push forward in order to attain an atmosphere of confidence in all sides.

The Israeli ambassador in Rome issued a statement on Tuesday in which he included Israeli allegations against Syria.
