Egypt, Economics, 2/20/2002
Minister of Information Safwat Al-Sherif said that the number of the channels of the Egyptian satellite has risen to 160 Egyptian, Arab and international channels such as Showtime, Orient, ART, BBC and CNN.
The Minister said that there are also 135 radio stations on the Egyptian satellite which confirms Egypt's pioneering role in the area.
International networks are increasing the number of their channels on the Egyptian satellite.
All Egyptian and international channels are carried to remote areas in Egypt such as East Uwainat, Abu Simbel, Toshka, Shalatin and St. Catherine.
In statements to the TV programme "Camera 2000" on Channel one, the Minister said that on Media Day in 1998, when President Mubarak opened the ground station of the Nile Sat, the rate of marketing at that time, as a beginning, was about 30 channels only.
He said that "our vision was that the world will give attention to digital channels and systems. At that time criticism was directed to the digital system on which the Nile Sat was based.
The majority of satellite dishes in Egypt used the analogue system. In spite of this, the digital system prevailed in the world.
He added that the Egyptian satellite provides new potentials for the future such as having one screen for the computer and television and also the "turbo-internet" system, i.e. the high speed internet through satellites and also the interactive age which will adopt the system of the "paid television" This system exists in the ShowTime, Orient and ART programmes and also the "viewing at request" system.
This system will be applied not only on films but also on lectures, programmes, news and bulletins.
