Sudan, Politics, 2/19/2002

The People's Congress which is led by Hassan al-Turabi and the rebel movement led by John Garang have agreed to expand the memorandum of understanding following talks that lasted for five days and took place between the delegations of the two sides in the two cities of Geneva in Switzerland and Bonn in Germany.

The meetings which were headed on the People's Congress by Al;I al-Haj the deputy secretary general of the congress party and on the rebel movement Baqan Amoum, member of the movement's leadership issued a statement centered on three main issues which are: means of achieving peace in Sudan; criticizing the government and strategic issues as well as the provisional work program between the party and the movement.

The statement which was signed by al-Mahboub Abdul Salam on behalf of the People's Congress and Yasser Araman for the rebel movement criticized the "repressive and oppressive measures carried out by the regime in Sudan against the People's Congress" and condemned "the violation of human rights and non abidance of international norms."

The statement, which was issued on February 16, by the Sudanese dailies, urged the international community and organizations to call on the Sudanese regime to halt the reservation acts of detention and to release political detainees, foremost being Hassan al-Turabi.

The statement called for working to attain just peace and democracy and expanding points of meeting and understanding among the political forces so as to get out the crisis.
