President Saleh and Cheney's tour
Yemen-USA, Politics, 2/18/2002
The Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has stressed that the issue of the Arab- Israeli conflict will be the focal point in the discussions to be held by the Yemeni President with the US Vice President Dick Cheney who will visit Yemen in the framework of a tour in the region.
The Yemeni President said in a statement to the London- based al- Hayat daily issued on Sunday that his country will ask the US during the talks to make Israel abide by, rather than pressuring it to implement international legitimacy resolutions. He announced his rejection to list the Lebanese and Palestinian national resistance movements Hamas, the Islamic Jihad and the Hizbullah party as terrorist organizations.
The Yemeni president underlined the importance of implementing the international legitimacy resolutions concerned because its implementation means the realization of just and comprehensive peace in the region, so as to found the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as a capital, stressingthat there will be no peace for Israel nor for the region without this.
He added that Yemen will discuss with Dick Cheney the international cooperation to fighting terrorism and means of bilateral cooperation. He asserted his country's rejection to any military act against what the US called the "axis of evil," which are Iraq, Iran and the People's Democratic Republic of Korea PDRK.
Saleh warned against striking Iraq. He said that the situation in the region will not be that easy as all alliances will be changed and the sympathy with the US in its war against terrorism will not continue if it will strike Iraq. He also called for the need of lifting the sanctions imposed on Iraq.
Saleh also called on the next Arab summit which will be held in Beirut to take a united position towards the "Zionist entity" by taking all means and measures which force Israel to recognize the Palestinian state. He called on the US to lift Israel's siege imposed on the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat and enable him to attend the Beirut's Arab summit.
