SCA receives 17,000 archeological pieces from citizen
Egypt, Local, 2/16/2002
The SCA received 17,000 pieces of antiquities that were in the possession of one citizen, who decided to cede them for the Culture Ministry to provide maintenance and restoration.
The antiquities comprise pieces that date back to the Pharaonic, Graeco-Roman and Coptic eras as well as Islamic inscriptions, engravings, plaques and earthenware.
SCA Secretary-General Gaballah Ali Gaballah said the SCA took stock of the artifacts which were moved to the SCA stores.
He said other two citizens who posses antiquities showed their readiness to hand them over.
Meanwhile, the SCA restored five pieces of rock artifacts that date back to the Modern Kingdom era.
The pieces were stolen from the Ramses II fort at Om El Rakhm in Mersa Matrouh.
They have got engravings and inscriptions in hieroglyphic and their importance lies in the fact that they are parts of architectural elements from the Ramses II temple, which was unearthed 50 years ago.
The pieces were stolen at night but the identity of the culprits was revealed.
