National conference urges more naval transportation
Egypt, Economics, 2/16/2002

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Trade Youssef Boutros Ghali said that transportation has become an independent and effective industry, and that there is a connection between the efficiency of the industry and the volume of exports and trade in general.

Boutros Ghali added that Egyptian fruit and vegetables that are exported often go rotten because their transportation is so slow.

He also noted that high transportation costs are another problem when it comes to agricultural exports.

At the round table meeting session of the National Conference for Transportation, Minister of Industry Ali el-Saidi stressed the importance of the transportation sector for local industry.

El-Saidi said that Egypt exported 173 million tons of industrial commodities last year.

He noted that this would not have happened without efficient transportation.

El-Saidi also called for developing sea and river transportation, arguing that is much cheaper than transportation by land.

He said that 92 per cent of internal transportation is currently overland, which is a problem for the government because it causes congestion in towns and cities and results in a lot of accidents.

He added that railroad transportation represents 6 per cent, while sea and river transportation accounts for only 2 per cent.

Minister of Transportation Ibrahim el-Demiri noted that the Ministry has drawn up plans for upgrading and developing the transportation sector.

He said that airports have been upgraded to absorb 34 million passengers annually and this figure will rise to 36 million in future.
