Lahoud underlines the importance of the European stand
Lebanon-European Union, Politics, 2/16/2002
The Lebanese President Emil Lahoud has stressed that the French and European ideas which were debated during the meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Spain, relating to the Arab- Israeli conflict, constitute an advanced European position.
During his meeting on Friday with the French ambassador to Lebanon Philip Le Kartieh the Lebanese President explained that the Arab summit which will be held in Beirut in March might discuss these ideas if the EU member states are willing to convert its ideas into an initiative to take out the situation in the Middle east from the catastraphic position it had reached.
Talks between President Lahoud and the French ambassador dealt with the efforts made by Lebanon to ensure the convening of the summit on its territories with a vast Arab leadership participation, including enabling the chairman of the Palestinian Authority yasser Arafat from attending the summit and taking part in its deliberations.
The French ambassador said that his talks with the Lebanese president dealt with the situation in Iraq and the American threats to direct a military strike against Iraq and the position of the European states towards this matter.
