Syria-Israel, Politics, 2/15/2002

The Syrians in the occupied Golan heights on Thursday observed a general strike in memory of the great general strike organized in 1982 and lasted for 6 months in protest of Israel's annexation of the occupied Syrian Golan heights.

News reports said that thousands of the people of the Golan raised the Syrian flags and pictures of President Bashar al-Assad in a gathering held on this occasion in Majdal Shams town the largest cities of the occupied Golan and chanted slogans stressing their rejection to the Israeli annexation decision of the Golan. A decision which is in contradiction to the resolutions of the international legitimacy and they voiced commitment to the Syrian identity.

In Quneitra, the liberated capital of the Golan, the Quneitra's Baath Party branch leadership on Thursday held a rally at Ein al-Tineh position which overlooks the occupied city of Majdal Shams, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the open strike declared by the people of the Golan in 1982, as an expression of their refusal of the Israeli occupation decision to annex the Golan and impose on them the Israeli identity.
