Demiri on transport projects
Egypt, Environment, 2/14/2002

There are a number of states that try to destroy coral reefs in the Red Sea, a US company was chosen to monitor navigation in Suez Canal, foreign companies were denied to operate in Ras Sidr, said Minister of Transport, Dr. Ibrahim Al Demiri.

In an interview with "Al Arabi" newspaper, Demiri answered a number of questions on transport in Egypt.

On the coral reefs wealth in Egypt, Demiri said there was a number of countries who do not wish Egypt well.

These countries try to destroy coral reefs by their tankers and cargo ships which destroy wealth of coral reefs in nature reserves. Demiri denied to name these countries !

On the decision by Ministry of Tourism to change disembarkation port of pilgrimage performers to Yanbu Port in Saudi Arabia, Demiri said the Ministry of Tourism does not have the right to take such a decision.

We discussed the matter with Minister of Tourism, Dr. Mamdouh AL Beltagui and he showed understandings.

When the Yanbu Port is fully prepared, we'll change the disembarkation port of the pilgrims to it.

On the US company that monitors navigation in the Suez Canal, Demiri said the monitoring is financed by US aid.

It's then, natural that a US company should be chosen to do the job! On Ras Sidr Port, Demiri said that the foreign companies were denied to take part in the project at the request of the security agencies.

Top officials in Norway have interfered in the matter to choose a Norwegian company to carry out the port, but these efforts were not accepted.
