Govt earmarked 25 billion pounds for transport sector in 2002/2007 plan
Egypt, Economics, 2/14/2002

Egypt's Prime Minister Atef Ebeid said that the government has earmarked about 25 billion pounds in investments in the transport sector in the five-year (2002/2007) plan.

These investments are divided as follows: 5.7 billion pounds for roads, 6.4 billion pounds for railways, 3.8 billion pounds for water transport, 5.9 billion pounds for air transport and 3.2 billion pounds for the underground metro.

This reflects the interest of President Hosni Mubarak in the transport sector, the Prime Minister said.

Evidence were the achievements in the past period such as opening the suspended bridge and the Ferdan railway bridge over the Suez Canal, the Azhar Tunnel, the development of Luxor airports and tourist areas and the sea ports north of Al Sukhna and the East Branch and the second Cairo underground metro at investments amounting to about four billion pounds.

The Prime Minister made the statements when he inaugurated Wednesday the First National Transport Conference.

Ebeid also inaugurated an exhibition held under the title of "contemporary issues and future orientations".

The two-day conference, chaired by Transport Minister Ibrahim El Demiri, will deal with national transportation strategies and future ventures.

Ebeid said 21 airports have been built, including international airports.

Railway services are being developed day after day, he said and pointed out that railways serve more than one million commuters daily.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday after opening the first national transport conference, Ebeid said that the government spends 1300 million pounds annually to support services, railways and land transport.
