Court commutes sentences against weekly managers
Morocco, Politics, 2/14/2002

The Casablanca court of appeal on Thursday commuted to suspended terms the jail sentences rendered a year ago against Abou Bakr Jamai and Ali Amar, respectively director and director general of the former Le Journal weekly.

The two managers were sued by foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, for libel.

The court also reduced the fine against the two managers to 1000 dirhams and the reparations from 2 million dirhams to 500,000 dirhams.

The former Le Journal weekly had run stories on the purchase by Benaissa of a residence in Washington, when he was serving as Morocco's ambassador to the USA.

Le Journal was closed for another case and replaced by Le Journal Hebdomadaire.
