Arafat fights with his security chief
Palestine, Politics, 2/14/2002
The UK daily The Independent reported today that Palestinian President "Yasser Arafat whipped out his gun and pointed it at the chief of his West Bank security services during an argument over the growing disorder among the Palestinians of the occupied territories."
The Independent added "His row with Jibril Rajoub - patched up yesterday by an oath of loyalty from the colonel - appears to have been over his forces' failure to control a mob which stormed a police station in Hebron and released 14 Islamic militants from jail."
Rajoub, for many the strong man of the Palestinians, draws fire from various circles within the Palestinian government because of the independent and sometimes ruthless method of operation he applies against Palestinian opponents.
Rajoub's name comes up in controversial terms when there is talk of who will succeed Arafat.
Arafat has been house arrest and under extreme pressure from Washington and Israel to conform to Israel's view on security and the appropriate way to proceed in any bilateral talks.
