Regional, Culture, 2/13/2002

The annual meeting of UNESCO's goodwill ambassadors held here this Feb.12-13 endorsed tow proposals tabled by Princess Lalla Meryem, eldest sister of Morocco's King Mohammed VI, on the holding in Morocco of an enlarged meeting on Children safety and protection in the Euro-Mediterranean area and beyond and on the creation of a medical, psychological and social support for Palestinian children.

The initiatives mulled by Princess Lalla Meryem, a UNESCO goodwill ambassador, were endorsed by all the ambassadors, including renowned Argentinean piano player, Miguel Angel Estrella, NASA's searcher and scientist, Malian Cheick Modibo Diarra, Chairwoman of the Lebanese Hariri Foundation, Bahia Hariri, French singer, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Director general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The proposals made by Princess Lalla Meryem, who chairs the Moroccan children rights observatory, are in line with international concerns for the protection and safety of children worldwide.

The princess proposes to materially help Palestinian children and to provide adequate training to agents in charge of supervising the health and psychological and social wellbeing of children in Palestine who are victim of ill-treatments. After she recalled that a delegation from the Moroccan children rights observatory made a trip to Palestine last year, she spoke of the effects of daily violence on the social coherence of the Palestinian people. She also explained how children are affected by psychological sufferings and traumas, before calling for an international commitment for children living in areas of armed conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Africa and elsewhere.

Regarding the proposal to convene a meeting of UNESCO goodwill ambassadors in Morocco, she said this will help design foundations for a common reference to inspire future action for the protection and safety of children.

The princess also chaired the signing ceremony of a convention for partnership in international events between the Moroccan observatory of children rights and the Lebanese Hariri foundation.
