Calls for fraternity between peoples, religions
Regional-European Union, Culture, 2/13/2002

Morocco on Tuesday called for consolidating fraternity among the peoples and religions of the world.

The call was made by Moroccan minister of habous (Islamic endowments) and Islamic affairs, Abdelkebir Alaoui M'daghri, at the joint forum on harmonization of cultures held by the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) and the European Union (EU).

The minister urged for an action program to deepen debate on issues posed and for starting a sincere dialogue to bridge the divide between peoples and religions and reach harmony and fraternity.

The present international situation requires the dissipation of misunderstanding and the lowering of cultural barriers with a view to reinforcing harmony among the different human civilizations, he said.

The two-day forum, titled "Civilization and harmony: the political dimension," brings together delegates of 71 countries to contribute to promoting rapprochement between the Muslim world and the west, following the misunderstandings triggered by last September's attacks against the USA.

The forum will be addressing several topics, mainly prevention of political and cultural divides, facing shared challenges and how to know the other.
