Tension at the Sudanese- Eritrean borders
Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 2/13/2002

The Sudanese daily al-Sahafi al-Dawli said in its Tuesday's issue unveiled that tension has returned back to the Sudanese- Eritrean borders on Monday after the Sudanese opposition claimed to have seized the Shalaloub border area which is 35 Km to the northern East of the city of Kasla.

Well-informed sources denied in statements to the paper the fall of the said area and noted that a failed attempt was made to occupy it and that the Sudanese forces challenged the opposition forces in this attack.

The paper added that an intensive artillery bombardment followed by an attack at Shalaloub started on Monday at midnight from inside the Eritrea's territories which is only 500 meters and that the raiding area belong to the rebel movement which was backed by new fighters transported by air in January to Eritrea.

Former news reports said from Asmara that the border area with Sudan is witnessing an active movement for the rebel forces.
