Egypt, Syria to eliminate barriers hindering inter-cooperation

Egyptian President Mubarak yesterday received Syrian Prime Minister Mohamed Mustafa Miro, who is currently visiting Cairo to co-chair the joint higher Egyptian-Syrian Committee.

Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, Egyptian ambassador to Syria Mohamed Ahmed Ismail, Deputy Syrian Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Syrian ambassador in Cairo attended the meeting.

Emerging from the meeting, the Syrian Prime Minister said he briefed the President on the progress of work of the joint higher Egyptian-Syrian committee, the results of the meetings and the draft agreements confirming development of relations.

He said President Mubarak instructed the Prime Ministers of Egypt and Syria to exert efforts for eliminate all barriers hindering the deepening of cooperation between the two states as a preliminary step towards the establishment of the Arab common market.

He said the agreements to be signed are aimed at expanding commercial and economic cooperation, reactivating the role of businessmen council, the establishment of joint projects and expanding tourist exchanges for polarizing cultural tourism through benefiting from heritage available to Egypt and Syria.

Miro described his meeting with President Mubarak as frank and successful.

On his part, Prime Minister Atef Ebeid said the President reviewed what was agreed upon during the meeting of the joint higher Egyptian-Syrian committee.

We were instructed by the President to act as one team in the upcoming stage, Ebeid Said adding that the president laid emphasis on the following:

- Developing trade between the two states as a preliminary step towards accession by other Arab countries.

- Developing joint projects so that the two countries may integrate with each other.

- Completing utilities in both countries as made in the field of electricity, this should take place in the fields of harbors, airports, land and air transport in order to facilitate transit of individuals and products.

Making an appraisal of administrative obstacles whether in the form of laws or any other form in preparation for eliminating them. Prime Minister Ebeid said an agreement was reached on reviewing all obstacles, eliminating them gradually and on reconsidering rules organizing the exchange of commodities.

Ebeid and his Syrian counterpart will today attend the signining of a group of agreements on cooperation in the field of planning, telecommunications, and information technology supporting private sector, expanding trade exchange and cooperation in the field of marketing the two countries commodities, local and international fairs and in reactivating tourism movement.

A cabinet source said projects for exporting natural gas to Syria would contribute to expanding the volume of trade between Egypt and Syria and meet Syria needs of energy.

He said the establishment of a free zone between the two states tops the agenda of the joint higher Committee as would lead to the flow of commodities and capitals freely.

Minister Of Housing Mohamed Ibrahim Soliman held a meeting yesterday with Syrian Minister of Building and reconstruction Hossam AL Aswad, following which he said a decision was reached on the establishment of joint Egyptian Syrian contracting companies with the aim of providing new job opportunities and the exchange of expertise between the two Countries, he said.
