Morocco's Princess Lalla Meryem calls for promotion of poor children's rights
Regional, Culture, 2/11/2002

Morocco's Princess Lalla Meryem, sister of King Mohammed VI, on Monday called on good-will ambassadors to double efforts to promote and protect the rights of children of poor families.

The Princess, who was made last year good-will ambassador of the UNESCO, made the call at the annual meeting of U.N good-will ambassadors, held Feb. 11-12 in Paris.

Princess Lalla Meryem had undergone a training at the UNESCO secretariat and closely followed the actions of the agency in matters of small children's education and young women's integration.

She surveyed the efforts made by Morocco to ensure child's protection and called for more solidarity to secure a better world for children.

She recalled how she became involved in the protection and security of children victim of armed conflicts, especially in Kosovo, Africa or the Arab region.

"A region, she said, where children (...) aspire simply to survival, as is the case of Iraq, while in Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and in Palestine, they dream of a day when arms will be laid and when they can finally live in peace and security," she stressed.
