Al-Ghabra summoned back to Kuwait over contacts with Israelis
Kuwait-Israel, Politics, 2/9/2002
The Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am said that the chairman of the Kuwaiti press office in Washington Shafik al-Ghabra was summoned to return back to Kuwait after contacts he recently made with Israeli figures. The paper added that al-Ghabra was summoned to Kuwait to give explanations over the meeting he did not notify the ministry of information about its.
The "People's Congress for Fighting Normalization With Israel," which takes Kuwait as a headquarters directed on Wednesday strong criticism to al-Ghabra because of the contacts he had made with Israeli figures and described what he did as a defiance and a crime for the Arab and the Islamic nation.
The said organization noted that al-Ghabra took part recently with the Israeli former foreign minister Shloumo Bin Ami and the president of Tel Aviv university Etimar Rabinovich in a seminar held in the framework of the World Economic Forum which was held in New York.
Replying to a question on Wednesday al-Ghabra said that he was invited to the World Economic Forum to take part in the general dialogue on the Arab- Israeli conflict. He said from Washington I was invited in my capacity as a university teacher and a writer who composed several books." He continued "I was not representing then the Kuwaiti government, but I took part in the 'Forum' in my capacity as a teacher in political sciences at Kuwait university." He said that the secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa also took part in the Forum.
