Washington intends to reduce number of its troops in Sinai
Egypt-USA, Politics, 2/8/2002

The US defense secretary Doland Ramsfeld has announced he is discussing means of reducing number of American troops serving within the Multi national force observers in Sinai.

News reports quoted Ramsfeld as saying that despite the fact that everyone says that the time is not proper for this step but a solution has to be found.

Worthy mentioning that 900 American soldiers are serving at the meantime, at the buffer zone between Egypt and Israel in Sinai in the force established in 1982. In all total number of troopers working there is 1800 from 11 countries.

Egypt and Israel have expressed opposition to this step. Some have interpreted these statements on removing this safety buffer as intended to put pressure on Egypt.
