Egypt urges for int'l efforts to spare humanity fatal diseases
Regional, Economics, 2/7/2002

Egypt's chief delegate to the UN Ahmad Abul Gheit underlined importance of international concerted efforts to narrow the gap between basic health care services now available for the developing nations and what they are really in need of.

During a symposium held by the UN Economic and Social Council on Tuesday in New York, Abul Gheit said supply of basic health care costs only $ 34 per capita per year.

Relation between development and health is one of the vital issues in Africa which is differing more development erosion every year for many reasons.

"One of these reasons is the huge human losses and the slicing more of already meager resources for health care to curb the mushrooming of diseases," he said.

"All these efforts remain short of catering for the growing rates of infection, especially AIDS," he noted.

"The Sub-Sahara alone hosts 75 percent of the world's AIDS fatalities, 90 percent of the earth's Malaria toll and 22 percent of the world's," said Abul Gheit.

The advanced nations failed to live up to the UN recommendations, floated 30 years ago, to earmark 0.07 percent of GDP for official assistance to the developing countries, said Abul Gheit, noting that only five countries abided by the proposal.
