Mauritanian president receives UMA outgoing secretary general
Mauritania-Maghreb, Politics, 2/7/2002
Mauritanian president Mouaouiya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya received on Wednesday outgoing secretary general of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), Mohamed Amamou.
Amamou said he expressed to the Mauritanian president his gratitude for the constant interest given to UMA. He also thanked the other heads of state of member countries for efforts to activate the Arab Maghreb Union.
The UMA secretary general was previously received by Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
Amamou, a Tunisian national, was replaced last month by Lahbib Boulares who had served as minister of defense, of foreign affairs, of information and culture, and speaker of the Tunisian parliament.
Boulares was named to the new position during the 19th session of the council of foreign ministers of the UMA member countries.
The outgoing UMA secretary general could not carry on his mission for health reasons.
UMA is made of Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.
