Arafat stresses he will take part in the Arab summit in Beirut
Palestine-Regional, Politics, 2/7/2002

The chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat, who is besieged in Ramullah since two months said in a statement issued on Wednesday that he will be attending the next Arab summit due to be held in Beirut in March.

In an interview given to the United Arab Emirates UAE daily al-Itihad and the Egyptian weekly al- Musawar, Arafat said:" I will attend the Beirut summit Inshallah."

Arafat added that the Saudi crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the Jordanian King Abdullah, and the King of Morocco Muhammad VI are " making efforts" to ensure he will be attending the summit. Arafat added that the " Lebanese President is careful for me to attend this summit which will be held in the Lebanese capital, especially as this summit will discuss the current situation."

He denied the involvement of the Palestinian Authority in the weapons ship "Karine A." He stressed that "the whole story is fabricated. This ship is owned by the Hizbullah party which it bought from its Iraqi owner for 400,000 USD and the weapons were on its way to the Hizbullah party. But Sharon has got us involved in this matter with the aim of provoking Washington, especially as the weapons are coming from Iran."
