Jordanian embassy denies that King Abdullah backed President Bush on 'evil axis'
Jordan-Iran, Politics, 2/7/2002

The Jordanian embassy in Tehran has stressed that what was published by certain media on that the Jordanian King Abdullah II backed statements made by the US President George Bush concerning the "evil axis" is not correct. The embassy said that Jordan is careful to maintain its relations with all Islamic states.

In a statement, the embassy said that the visit of King Abdullah to the US aims at explaining the Jordanian position towards the cause of Palestine on the ground that King Abdullah is the president of the Arab summit. The statement continued that King Abdullah has always called on the US to continue its dialogue with the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat and that the king also called for the stability of the region in the interest of all parties in the Middle East and the Gulf region.

Worthy mentioning that the Iranian foreign ministry on Tuesday evening summoned the Jordanian ambassador in Tehran Bassam al-Ammoush and informed him Iran's protest on the support shown by the Jordanian King to statements made by the US President George Bush in which he described Iran, Iraq and North Korea as terrorist states.

The Iranian foreign ministry asked the Jordanian ambassador to give explanations to this effect, noting that the Jordanian ambassador stressed to the Iranian foreign ministry Jordan's friendly relations with Iran and that he will convey this matter to his country's government very quickly and will also inform the Iranian leadership about the answer.
