Israel will not release the Lebanese detainees
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 2/6/2002
In discussions made by the foreign affairs and security committee at the Israeli Knesset recently, the secretary of the Israeli government Jadoun Saar stressed that Israel does not intend to release 16 Lebanese detainees from its prisoners and does not intend to consider them illegal fighters so as to have the excuse to continue their detention.
The BBC correspondent in the occupied territories said that 14 of those detainees were sentenced for various periods of imprisonment but Israel refuses to release them after the end of their imprisonment.
The correspondent added that among the Lebanese detainees are Sheikh Abdul Karim Obeid and Mustafa al-Deirani who were kidnapped by Israel more than 10 years from Lebanon in an act of piracy and subjected them to imprisonment and great torture in contradiction with the humanitarian sense.
