Kuwaiti members of parliament call for the resignation of the government
Kuwait, Politics, 2/5/2002

Members at the Kuwaiti parliament on Monday called for the resignation of the government because of the explosion that took place at the al-Rawdatin oil field and reduced oil daily production at one third.

The Islamist member of parliament Abdullah al-Aradah said during a debate concerning the explosion which took place on Thursday that the government should "stand with the minister and shoulder the full responsibility and also resign with the minister... if oil is lost the whole country will be lost..."

The Kuwaiti oil minister al-Subeih gave his resignation on Sunday because of the explosion which resulted in killing four persons and stopped production in all oil fields in the northern part of Kuwait. The resigned minister told the parliament that partial resumption of oil production in the north may need 15 to 30 days.

Most of the members of the parliament said that the prime minister should accept the resignation of al-Subeih, but others said that this huge explosion should force the whole government to resign.

In a later statement, the Kuwaiti deputy premier and foreign minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah told journalists that the government will not resign. He said that accepting the resignation of al-Subeih is specialty of the crown prince Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah. It was not clear whether the crown prince will accept the resignation which al-Subeih stressed is not a " political game."
