Hungarian cultural week in Damascus
Syria-Hungary, Culture, 2/4/2002

The Hungarian cultural days were opened on January 27th- February 3rd at the Damascus Arab Cultural Center- Mazze. They were inaugurated under the patronage of the Syrian minister of culture Dr. Najwa Qassab Hassan, in the presence of the ambassador of Hungary in Damascus Balazs Bokor

This is the first step of several Hungarian cultural events in the four coming months in Damascus, held under the patronage of the Syrian minister of culture Najwa Qassab Hassan, said the Hungarian ambassador in Damascus Mr. Balazs Bokor in a statement to Arabic news. He added: we are opening the exhibition of a Hungarian painter artist Viola Kiss whose last exhibition was in Budapest in September, 2001.

The opening was followed by a Hungarian Folk music concert of Eva Kanalas and Geza Fabri.

He continued:" we think that culture is the real bridge between people that is why we want to develop on relations with the Syrian people in the field of culture ."

Hungarian culture is well- known all over the world. And we try to give some ideas about it in Syria."

The ambassador added, " we" are very happy to make important events like issuing for the first time an anthology of Hungarian literatures in Arabic. This happened after an activity of one year. This work was conducted when al-Madaa editing house in Damascus issued in 5,000 copies the Anthology. So for this point of view Syria is also contributing to spread the Hungarian culture in the Arab world.

He explained: " we have ideas to make joint cultural events with Syrian friends. We have ideas to perform together with the Syrian minister of Culture in the field of archeology, music and the theatre.

Among other Hungarian cultural activities to be conducted in Syria, the ambassador said: " we are bringing to Syria this spring a ballet troupe and the chamber Orchestra to perform the pieces of very famous and important Hungarian composers like Bela Bartok, Zoltan Kodaly and Ference Liczt.

Worthy mentioning that artist Viola Kiss was born in 1953 in Szilnok, Hungary. Studied painting in 1971- 1973 in Budapest. Married to Ahmad Bassam Hatem in 1974 and moved to Syria in 1975.

Started silk- painting in 1988, had her first exhibition in 1994 in the Damascus Arab Cultural Center Ð Mezze followed by a number of events in Damascus and Budapest.

She is the designer of one of the main samples of Renoir Porcelain Factory in Syria.

Singer Eva Kanalas was born in 1970 in Bekescsaba, Hungary. Lover of Hungarian Folksongs from the age of 14. In 1991 she got the title " young master of the folk art in Hungary.

Participated at several folksong festivals in Hungary, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, Turkey, Russia, Romania and Slovakia.

An Authentic performer of Hungarian Folksongs she performer the oldest Hungarian songs which have real original roots.

Stringiest Geza Habri was born in 1953 in Zenta. Fond of national music from early childhood. Plays several Hungarian national instruments like " Tambura,"" Koboz."

Fond of ancient national music in southern Hungary. Together with Eva Kanalas, constant participant at the so called " dance house" movement where old Hungarian national dances are taught to young people.
