EIB loan for health project in Syria at 100 million EUR

In a press conference he held on Sunday evening at the Damascus Sheraton Hotel attended by local and foreign pressmen in Damascus the EIB, currently visiting Damascus said that the EIB will be financing the first health project in Syria at a cost of EUR 100 million.
He added in the press conference which was attended by Mrs Mackfersson and Mr. Piereini that the loan will contribute to equipping 15 hospitals in Syria and will save its required instruments.
He indicated other projects agreed to be financed by the EIB in Syria including the project of modernizing and equipping Tartous port at EUR 45 million and the project to expand the telephone lines as well as the project of improving the main high way between Aleppo- Deir Ezz Zour.
He stressed the interest of the EIB to finance small and intermediate projects for the private sector, noting that the bank is currently studying a mechanism to provide these loans at good conditions.
He indicated that the bank started in 2000 to give loans to Syria and that in 2001 the EIB signed a contract with the ministry of electricity at EUR 150 million. He stressed that the EIB which has the EU member states is a non- profitable organization and that the volume of its investments in the Middle east reached EUR 3 billion and that other EUR 6.5 billion were allotted for the coming five years.
For her part Mrs. Mackferson gave a briefing on areas of cooperation between the Bank and Syria. She indicated two important areas of cooperation the first is the infrastructure to include health, education, telecommunications, transport, electricity, the environment and drainage system and the second in the area of financing the private sector in industry, tourism and services.
