Sudanese opposition criticizes government's performance
Sudan, Politics, 2/4/2002

The Sudanese opposition People's Congress party, led by Hassan al-Turabi, who has been put in a home arrest criticized the Sudanese government policy towards public freedom of citizens and called for lifting the state of emergency and canceling all freedom- restricting laws, to immediately release political detainees or to bring them before the court for trial, including al-Turabi himself.

The party's leading commission called in a statement by the Sudanese al-Ayam on Saturday for the formation of a provisional government representing all Sudanese forces and to founding of an elected national council, and all these to be followed by elections that pave for the foundation of states' legislative council and then the election of local councils.

The leading commission also authorized the party's leaderships abroad to develop the memorandum of understanding between the party and the rebel movement led by John Garang.

Worthy mentioning that Turabi and several leading figures of his party were arrested following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the People's Congress party and the Rebel movement in Switzerland in February 2001 and Turabi is still under home arrest since then.
