Russian optimism over Iraq's permitting UN inspectors to return back
Iraq-Russia, Politics, 2/4/2002

Russia on Saturday evening expressed optimism over possibilities of reaching an agreement with Iraq that permits the return back of UN weapons inspector to return back to it and pave the way before lifting the sanctions which have been imposed on Baghdad since ten years.

News reports quoted the Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanove as saying in a speech before the International Economic Cooperation Forum that there are reasons and signals which raise the belief " we will reach, through politics to the appropriate solution," stressing the need of being patient.

These statements made by Kasyanove came just few days after the accusations made by the US President George Bush against Iraq, Iran and Democratic Korea in being part of what he called the " axis of evil." Kasyanove also stressed Russia's strong rejection to expand the campaign which is led by the US to Iraq. "we do not think there are evidences that justify this action against Iraq." He added that Moscow is ready to discuss any evidences of the sort, if they are stated by the US.

The US and Russia will hold meetings this week to this effect over the possibility of implementing what is called by Washington as "smart sanctions" permitting Iraq to get food stuffs and medicines at a time it strengthens the US embargo on weapons.
