Syria-USA, Politics, 2/4/2002
News reports in Amman have expected according to political sources that a summit will take place between the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the US President George Bush during the few coming months.
The sources said that Arab capitals of close links to Washington had proposed the convening of such a meeting and said that President Bush welcomed the idea and asked the US state department and the national security council to study an agenda proposed for this summit and to coordinate with Damascus in order to prepare for this agenda.
The news reports indicated that the number of American delegations which visited Syria during the last few weeks reached some 18 parliamentary, security and political delegation in addition to dialogues initiated in the American circles specialized on the Middle East at the US state department and the national security council, all indicated the possibility of convening a Syrian- American summit.
The sources added that Syrian- American cooperation in the area of fighting terrorism was successful but the only obstacle which still impedes the formulations of a new phase of relations between the two countries is the question of the Hizbullah party and the Syrian support for the Palestinian resistance group and each country's identification of the meaning of terrorism.
