Egypt stresses importance of reviewing biological weapons ban treaty
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 2/2/2002
The implementation of treaty on banning biological weapons and its related measures should gain due momentum on the international arena in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and ensuing emergence of the anthrax microbe in the United States, said ambassador Ahmed Abul-Gheit, Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN.
Emerging from a symposium on the treaty banning biological weapons and the UN role in combating bio-terrorism, Abul-Gheit said that these incidents prompted the world disarmament and non-proliferation activists to launch a dialogue on the role of the treaty in combating bio-terrorism and preventing terrorist groups to reach biological weapons.
He noted that these incidents coincided with the fifth conference on reviewing the biological weapons ban treaty.
The chairman of the conference, meanwhile, spoke about the repercussions behind the failure to reach a draft final communique last December, a matter that prompted its delay to November 2002 in a bid to give the parties to the treaty some time to reach an agreement over the bones of contention.
