European efforts to convene Madrid 2 conference

The London- based al-Hayat daily said in its Friday's issue, quoting European sources said that the European Union is currently studying a proposal states to convene an international conference on the Middle East in which the Palestinian Authority, Israel, Russia, the US, the Arab states and the European Union will take part.

The paper indicated, quoting the European sources that Spain, in its current capacity as the head of the current rotating presidency of the European Union, is making consultations with the Arab and international sides to convene an international conference ( Madrid 2) within the coming months.

The sources said that it was expected that a meeting would have been held in Washington on Thursday to be attended by the European envoy Miguel Moratinos and his Russian counterpart Andre Vidovin, the UN delegate Terry Larsen and the American delegate William Burns.

The Italian prime minister Silvio Berlskoni had a proposal to convene an international conference.
