Damascus doubts statements by Israeli defense minister on resumption of peace talks
Syria-Israel, Politics, 2/2/2002

Member of the Syrian parliament, the rapparateur of the national security committee at the Syrian People's Assembly ( parliament ) Yasser Nahlawi has expressed his doubts over statements made by the Israeli defense minister Benjamin Bin Aliazer on Israel's readiness to make negotiations with Syria.

He said that Israel is trying to divert the attention away from the situation in the Palestinian territories and may be to hide " Israel's aggressive intention" towards the Arabs, through announcing the possibility of resuming the negotiations with Syria.

Nahlawi explained in a telephone statement to the Qatari- based al-Jazira TV that " whenever there is a crisis between Israel and the Palestinians, an Israeli official declares that Israel is ready to resume negotiations with Syria."

Linking this Israeli attitude to halting the Syrian support to the Lebanese Hizbullah party, the Syrian parliament member said that this is an evidence on Israel's lack of seriousness. He clarified, that for Syria and for the Arab states, the Hizbullah party is a legitimate resistance movement against the Israeli occupation. He continued if Israel desires a genuine peace it would have already resumed the negotiations from the point it stopped at.

Worthy mentioning that Syrian- Israeli negotiations have been frozen since January 2000. Damascus demands dull Israeli withdrawal from the Golan heights occupied by Israel since 1967. A matter which has been so far rejected by Israel.
