Morocco stages tourism promotion campaign in Spain

Morocco will stage an ambitious promotion campaign for its tourism in Spain following the 8% drop in the number of Spanish tourists who visited Morocco in 2001, said an official from the tourism ministry.

The official who was dedicating in Madrid the Moroccan pavilion at the 22nd international tourism fair (from January 30 through Feb.3) told MAP bureau in Madrid the Spanish market is very important as Spaniards are generally seeking cultural tourism. "We wish to create in the Spanish tourists the need for rural and sports tourism," he said noting that the Moroccan authorities have doubled the budget of the Moroccan tourism office and increased its means.

The official who also took part in the meeting of a World Tourism Organization's crisis cell pondering on how to overcome problems entailed by terror attacks against the USA added that several Spanish tourism projects have been maintained and others are underway while other entrepreneurs are closely following Morocco's actions meant to reach 10 million tourists by 2010.

The Moroccan pavilion, extending over 350 square meters, is conceived as a set of Moroccan ryads (old houses with inner gardens) and displays new attractions offered by the Kingdom. Morocco also presented an internet web page in Spanish. Visitors are treated with mint tea and Moroccan cookies, in addition to displays of Moroccan handicraft and henne drawing.

Some 170 countries are taking part in the fair.
