UN Security Council: military solution in the region is futile
Regional, Politics, 2/1/2002
The UN Security Council has expressed its increasing concern over the unprecedented escalated confrontation and continued deterioration of the situation in the Middle East and called for dialogue and negotiations.
News reports said that a non-obligatory statement by the UN Security Council read by the ambassador of Mauritius, which presides over the rotating presidency of the council in conclusion of close- door consultations on the Middle East, noted the futility of the military solution and that confrontations lead to more acts of violence.
The statement said it commends and encourages the commitment of the UN, the European Union, the US, Russia and China and the other countries involved in the peace process.
However, these talks held by the UN Security Council on Wednesday are considered as unprecedented as the first of its kind.
The UN special envoy to the Middle East Terry Larsen said that the Israelis and the Palestinians are in need of a bridge that brings them back to peace negotiations. A bridge that should be given by a third party, noting that it will be difficult for the two parties to proceed forward with reciprocated confidence without the support of a third party and this party can be the US or any side of the four- member group or the four sides together.
The UN envoy added that the situation is now very grave to the extent it needs to hold consultations in Washington.
It is expected that Larsen and the Russian envoy to the Middle East Andre Vadovin, the envoy of the EU to the Middle East Miguel Moratinos, the US under secretary of state William Burns to discuss the issue that the US to resume its mediation role in the conflict.
