Moroccan fishery office to invest more than us$ 47 million over five years

The Moroccan Office National des Peches (ONP) is projecting an investment of 542 million Dirhams (more than US$ 47.13 million) part of its mid-term orientation plan covering the 2002-2006 period.
The figures were disclosed by the ONP director general, Majid Kaissar El-Ghaib, at a news conference in Rabat following the meeting of the managing board of the office.
The ONP chief said this investment program will be an engine for other public and private investments that are expected to reach 4 billion DH (about $347.82 million) and to create more than 6,000 new jobs.
El-Ghaib who surveyed the coastal and traditional fishing activity in 2001 said the volumes unloaded reached 978,639 tons for a value of about 2.55 billion DH (about $222.17 million), recording an increase of 28 percent in volume and 23 percent in value compared to the previous year.
He also surveyed the ONP's efforts to improve infrastructures and the marketing network through the construction of new fish markets and new fishermen's villages and recalled that the fish markets of Tangiers, Mehdya and Laayoune were accredited to the ISO 9002 standards in April 2001.
The managing board approved ONP's functioning and investment budgets for 2002 that are worth 140 million DH ($ 12.17 million) and 126 Million DH (nearly $10.95 million).
