Report: Khatami, Libyan minister discuss bilateral cooperation

Iran's President Mohammad Khatami said on Monday Iran and Libya have firm relations and that the two countries have always stood by each other through difficult times, IRNA reported.

In a meeting with Libyan Secretary for Justice and Public Security Muhammad Ali al-Mosrati, the president said that "Iran and Libya share the view that Islam is the foundation for national identity and moral values and call for solidarity of the Islamic Ummah and the Arab nations." The president referred to the threats the enemies posed to the Islamic nations and said that the Islamic states are suffering from backwardness and major difficulties. "In order to get rid of dependence on others, the Islamic states should work rapidly to head for economic, scientific and industrial development," President Khatami saidwas qouted as saying by IRNA.

IRNA added, "The president said that the Islamic states have extensive resources to make good on the backwardness and called for national resolve of the Islamic nations to tread the way for a bright prospect. He said that holding the meetings of Tehran-Tripoli joint economic commission is great step forward progress of the two countries. He called for putting into practice the accords already reached between the two countries. President Khatami said that Iran and Libya would become a good trade partners adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran is willing to develop bilateral, regional and international cooperation with Libya."

Khatami underlined the need for establishment of democracy in the Islamic states and said that when democracy is established in line with the moral and national values, it will serve progress and development. Al-Mosrati conveyed greetings of Libyan Leader Moammar Qadhafi to President Khatami and said that Libyan leadership and nation appreciated President Khatami's initiatives to hold dialogue of civilizations and hence promoting international peace, the repot added.
