President Mubarak meets Chinese leaders

Egyptian-Chinese relations figure high in Beijing's international relations. During the second day of his landmark 4-day visit to China, President Hosni Mubarak held significant meetings with top Chinese government and parliament officials, during which he stressed the need for international action to achieve peace in the Middle East.
President Hosni Mubarak held talks Thursday with Chinese parliament speaker Li Peng and the head of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Council.
Emerging from the meeting information minister Safwat Al-Sherif told reporters that the two sides asserted the importance of working together to realise peace in the Middle East.
They warned of wars that bring destruction to the world saying that peace is a precious goal that requires the serious work of all countries of the world to be attained.
Sherif said that the president talked to the Chinese leaders on the deteriorating conditions between the Palestinians and Israelis and warned of the dangerous effect on peace and the entire world of the Israeli prime minister's policies. The Israeli premier's stances would not bring peace to his people and would push the Palestinians to resort to violence, the president explained.
The Chinese leaders asserted the need to exert efforts to reach wise solutions to the Middle East issue because realizing justice is the only way to eliminate terrorism and realize stability in the whole world, Sherif said.
President Mubarak asserted that Egypt and China enjoy profound relations and have always shared the same principles and values, he said.
The president reviewed all facts related to the Palestinian issue and the peace process in theME, he said, adding that the president voiced hope that the world would learn from mistakes of the past century that witnessed two world wars and that the new century would be that of understanding.
He referred to the president's call for holding an anti-terrorism international conference within the framework of respecting the legitimate rights of the peoples and avoiding mixing terrorism with the legitimate struggle of peoples for freedom.
The Chinese leaders praised Egypt's achievements under the wise leadership of president Mubarak, he added.
Information Minister Safwat al-Sherif Thursday said President Hosni Mubarak focused during his meeting with Prime Minster Zhu Rongji on bilateral cooperation within the framework of activating strategic cooperation.
In statements to reporters following the meeting, Sherif referred to China's keenness on putting into effect the five agreements signed on Wednesday.
The Chinese premier will visit Egypt to promote relations and activate the agreements, he said, adding that the premier asserted China's keenness on maintaining relations with Egypt.
The latest developments between the Palestinian national authority and Israel were on the agenda of talks between the Egyptian President and the Chinese premier, who asserted the need to exert international efforts to contain the deteriorating situation and avoid dangerous repercussions at the regional and international levels, he said.
The two sides asserted their countries' stance regarding the need to confront the phenomenon of terrorism, he added.
Talks also covered the outcome of the visit to China by head of the interim Afghan government Hamid Karzai, he said.
