Sharon threatens to strike the Palestinians wherever they exist
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/24/2002
With the escalation of the Israeli onslaught against the Palestinians through breaking into cities and tightening the siege, assassinating national cadres, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon threatened to take toughest measures to strike the Palestinians wherever they do exist, stressing that his government will continue this very policy and accused the Palestinian Authority of sponsoring what he described as terrorism.
While the Israeli forces were put in a state of utmost alert under the pretext that there are warnings on the possibility of " suicide operations," the BBC correspondent in the occupied Palestinian territories said that Sharon instructed his forces to direct blows and sudden attacks against the Palestinians and the Palestinian Authority centers and security departments.
The chairman of the Israeli Knesset Abraham Bourg said that Sharon's plan can be put to destroy the Palestinian Authority and then Israel will not have partners, so as it can keep the settlements. He explained that Sharon might achieve small tactical successes but these will lead to huge strategic failures.
While the Israeli President Moshe Katsav claimed that the Palestinian Authority is the side responsible for the operations against Israel, the Israeli minister of the Interior Ozi Landao called for installing a security barrier between the Israelis and the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, stressing his support for the Israeli military operations against the Palestinians.
For his part, the chairman of the Israeli Merits movement Yusi Sarid said that history will record that the government of Sharon is the " bloodiest and most terrorist in the history of Israel." In a speech he delivered at the Israeli Knesset on Wednesday, Sarid added that the government of Sharon was elected by extremists Israelis with their slogan " give the Israeli army the chance to win victory," while the slogan of that government was " security and peace for the Israelis." A matter which proves that the government of Sharon is the government of vicious victories at the expense of real peace and security.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority's secretary general Ahmad Abdul Rahman refused the accusations raised by Sharon's government concerning the "martyrdom" operations carried out on Tuesday in Jerusalem and resulted in killing two Israelis and wounding 30.
Abdul Rahman said that this operation came in retaliation to Sharon's criminal acts against the Palestinians and the killing and assassinations of Palestinians and destruction of their houses.
He said that the solution lies in the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Palestinian territories. Abdul Rahman called for an immediate international intervention to halt the Israeli massacre against the Palestinians.
