Possible meeting between al-Bashir, al-Meirghani next month
Sudan, Politics, 1/23/2002

Sudanese governmental sources have disclosed that preparations are underway for a meeting between the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and the leader of the Sudanese opposition, who is also the chairman of the democratic national coalition Muhammad Othman al- Meirghani, who recently met in Cairo with the secretary general of the national congress party in Sudan Ibrahim Ahmad Omar.

According to these sources which asked not to be identified, al-Bashir and al-Meirghani will be meeting, if efforts succeed, in Cairo in February.

The sources said that the meeting will, among other things, continue discussions on what the secretary general of the National Congress party had discussed with al- Meirghani with the aim to push forward the national reconciliation efforts, especially as the two sides, according to the sources, seemed to believe in the need to accelerate the steps towards the political solution.
