Military cooperation with Egypt, one of US priorities
Egypt-USA, Politics, 1/22/2002
General Richard B. Myers, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) underlined on Monday that military cooperation with Egypt is one of the US Administration's priorities.
In an interview with the Egyptian TV program "Good Morning Egypt", Myers said that his talks with President Hosni Mubarak Sunday were very good and tackled a host of topics atop of which came the security situation and the Middle East situation together with the military affairs.
Touching on war in Afghanistan, Myers said that it is part of the US drive against terrorism and it will go beyond Afghanistan eventually.
"The ultimate goal of the anti-terrorism campaign is to uproot terrorism and deter countries harbouring terrorists," he noted.
Answering a question on keeping US forces in Afghanistan, Myers said that the US does not plan to keep any forces in Afghanistan for long.
"The US forces will remain there until Osama Bin Laden and Mullah Mohammed Omar are arrested," he clarified.
As for the possibility of striking Iraq, Meyers said that the US does not want to see a country manufacturing weapons of mass destruction so that these weapons would not be used by terrorism.
"He noted that Washington has received worrying information that Iraq is producing weapons of mass destruction," he noted.
"Washington is now following the policy of "containment" with Iraq," he explained.
