Regional statistical cooperation with the European Union

The Steering Committee of the Regional Statistical Co-operation Programme (MEDSTAT) will hold its sixth annual meeting on 24 and 25 January in Cordoba, Spain. The Steering Committee brings together representatives of the EU's Statistical Office (Eurostat), and of Statistical Offices in the 27 Euro-Mediterranean Partners and in European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries.

The meeting aims first and foremost at discussing the main chapters in each MEDSTAT II subprogram's terms of reference. MEDSTAT was implemented during the period 1996-2001, and was extended until 2004 (MEDSTAT II). A call for tender for MEDSTAT II will be launched in the course of this year.

Meantime, An EU-Maghreb Workshop was held from 13 to 15 January in Algiers to prepare a sub-regional project on maritime transport statistics. Participants expressed their determination to establish a common data base in this area for the whole Maghreb sub-region. In this context they discussed statistical requirements at port level.

The sub-regional project will be funded under MEDA within the MEDSTAT Programme of regional statistical co-operation. It will be operated by CESD-Roma, an agency sponsored by the Italian National Statistical Institute (ISTAT) under the supervision of Eurostat, the EU?s Statistical Office. Participants visited the port of Algiers and were invited to visit that of Antwerp as part of their study of relations between ports and cities.
