US official holds contacts in Morocco
Morocco-USA, Politics, 1/22/2002
US under-secretary of state for public affairs and diplomacy, Charlotte Beers, currently on a visit to Morocco, held on Monday a series of meetings with members of the Moroccan government.
The US official met premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi, who said the Palestinian sufferings are for Moroccans a national cause and said Washington is able to have the two sides resume negotiations and compel Israel to end its destruction of Palestinian infrastructure facilities.
He also recalled satisfaction triggered by a statement of US president George W. Bush that a Palestinian state is part of the US vision in the region.
The meeting that Beers held with secretary of state for foreign affairs and cooperation Taieb Fassi Fihri, covered "the excellent Morocco-US relations, the implications of last September 11 events and regional and international issues," said a Moroccan official statement. The two officials also talked about the present critical and serious situation in the occupied Arab territories.
The US official also met with human rights minister, Mohamed Aujjar, who underscored that the ongoing dynamic democratic experience in Morocco is an irreversible choice that meet the will of all the Moroccan society components.
Aujjar also insisted on the necessity of drawing a clear distinction between Islam and terrorism as Islam is a religion that upholds tolerance, peace, freedom and dialogue.
