Palestinian envoy with message from Arafat to al-Assad
Palestine-Syria, Politics, 1/22/2002
The Jordanian weekly al-Bilad said in its recent issue that the Palestinian official in charge of the Palestinian parliamentary issues will arrive in Damascus carrying a message to President Bashar al-Assad from Arafat concerning the current Palestinian condition in light of the Israeli siege imposed on the Palestinian territories.
The paper quoted well-informed Palestinian sources as saying that Amre will, on the other hand, carry a Syrian answer to Arafat's message carried earlier by member of the central committee of the Fatah Movement Abbas Zaki two days earlier to President al-Assad.
These sources said that the Syrian vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam informed Zaki that Syria is ready to help in eliminating any obstacles that might face the realization of the Palestinian unity and readiness to push forward to convene a special Arab summit dedicated to discuss the Palestinian question.
The sources added that Khaddam stressed to the Palestinian official that putting Arafat in a " home custody," is a violation that is shouldered by all Arabs. The sources also added that Khaddam underlined the importance of joint coordination towards Beirut's summit and helping Syria in bridging the rift within the PLO and supporting it financially.
