Egypt-USA, Politics, 1/21/2002
The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak yesterday received former US President Bill Clinton.
Following the meeting, President Mubarak hosted a breakfast in honor of the former US President, attended by Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, the Chairman of the Future Generation Foundation Gamal Mubarak and Chief of the Presidential Cabinet Zakaria Azmi.
Head of the Future Foundation Gamal Mubarak asserted that Egypt has enormous educated human resources and strong youth potentials, adding that the economic and social progress in Egypt depends on the technological development of youth.
Addressing a charity dinner banquet hosted by the Future Foundation Friday night, under the auspices of Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, wife of President Hosni Mubarak and attended by former US President Bill Clinton as main guest of honour, Gamal Mubarak welcomed Clinton, hailing his efforts during his term in office in quest of a just and peaceful settlement in the Middle East.
On the effects of the September 11 attacks, Gamal Mubarak said these incidents have created some kind of entente among peoples of the world and this could be a basis for the new millennium.
"Ignorance gives birth to terrorism but it also generates bias and discrimination," he said, adding that those recent incidents revealed our deep ignorance of each other cultures and societies.
"Our peoples should work side by side to avoid splits that could jeopardize order on our planet," he said, adding that the Future Foundation adopts the idea to build the mind and build the interest in knowledge.
Clinton delivered a speech in which he thanked all those in charge of the Future Foundation, saying that people everywhere always hope to realise economic and human development.
He said, during his years in office, he cooperated for a long time with President Hosni Mubarak and visited Egypt four times, praising the efforts exerted by Egypt to develop the economy and up its growth rate to 5 percent thanks to the interest in export.
Clinton said he expects a powerful economic growth in Egypt in the future.
"We cannot build a powerful global economy without renouncing terrorism and violence, getting over our differences and building our societies in the future on basis of common values," he said.
Clinton expressed appreciation to Egypt adding that President Mubarak announced support for the measures to eliminate terrorism, from which Egypt has suffered a great deal.
Egypt is in a state of peace since the Camp David agreement, he said, adding that he worked closely with President Mubarak in order to establish peace in the region.
Both the Palestinians and Israelis who live on the same land have their legitimate rights and neither of them would give this up, he noted.
"Violence and terrorism that kill the innocents will not prevail and hence it is essential to replace killing with negotiations through constructive action," he said.
Clinton underscored interest in education and information technology as well as boosting trade so that citizens would lead a decent life.
