Mubarak's visit to China great event, Chinese president
Egypt-China, Politics, 1/21/2002
The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's forthcoming visit to China is a great event, said Chinese President Jiang Zemin, adding that President Mubarak is an old friend.
He noted that cooperation ties between Egypt and China will see a great development in the years to come, pointing out the strategic agreement with Mubarak has set the goals and laid the framework for strong and sustained relations.
In an interview with Mahfouz AL Ansari, MENA Board Chairman and Chief Editor, to be aired by MENA Monday on the eve of President Mubarak's visit to China that kicks off next Wednesday, Jiang spoke about the Egyptian-Chinese relations, the international situation, the international campaign against terrors, the issues of development in the third world and other important topics.
Jiang said that equality and common benefit are our basis of trade and economic relations.
We are against terrorism and reject linking it to any religion, nation or region and the expansionist trend in combatting it as we view that military actions do not offer a radical solution, he said.
Concrete evidence should be provided and targets determined ahead of dealing any strikes as stretching the scope of the military activities puts the international unity against terrorism at stake, he added.
On the issue of Taiwan, Jiang said Taiwan is the most important and most thorny issue in the Chinese-US relations.
The key to healthy development in our relations with the United States is commitment to soundly deal with the issue of Taiwan, he stressed, adding that foreign interference in the South China Sea further complicates the matter.
We are immensely concerned with the tension between India and Pakistan and we hope both sides would observe self-restraint, Jiang said, adding that the international community must exert its endeavours.
He cited positive indications in international relations, referring to a growing number of visits and contacts among world leaders.
The basic contradictions, however, still exist and the north-south gap is growing wider as the world has a long way to go to remove the causes of confrontation and establish a new type of international relations, he said.
The Chinese President pinpointed that the United Nations and Security Council will have a great role to play in combatting terrorism.
On cooperation with developing countries, Jiang said it is a mainstay in China's foreign policies.
Advanced countries must take into account the interests of developing nations and we call for a new world political-economic order that is based on achieving justice, development and prosperity for all countries, he added.
