Washington commends Yemen's efforts in chasing extremist groups
Yemen-USA, Politics, 1/18/2002

The US under secretary of state for the Middle East affairs William Burns on Thursday expressed his country's satisfaction over the efforts made by Yemen in chasing those who are suspected to be involved with terrorist organizations.

News reports quoted Burns as saying in a statement before leaving Aden his last station in the framework of a tour on several states in the Middle East that he had transmitted a message to the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh from the US President George Bush in which the latter expressed his satisfaction over the efforts made by Sanaa in this regard.

Burns added that bilateral cooperation between the US and Yemen in the economic, military and security areas have been notably increasing.

During his meeting with Burns, the Yemeni President called on the US to carry out an effective role in pressuring Israel in order to halt its escalated and grave aggressions against the Palestinians and to implement international legitimacy resolutions concerned to the Arab- Israeli conflict.

The Yemeni news agency Sabaa said that during the meeting between President Saleh and Burns discussions dealt with regional and international developments, foremost being developments in the region.

The agency added that the American official informed Saleh with results of his tour which covered several Arab states in the region within the framework of the American efforts aiming at calming down conditions and reviving the ME peace process.

President Saleh expressed confidence in the ability of the US to convince all sides concerned to calm down conditions and resume negotiations so as to achieve just and comprehensive peace in the region.

The agency on the other hand said that that Saleh stressed his country's commitment to fighting terrorism and backing the international efforts to eliminate it so as to serve international stability and security. This was expressed in the context of the Yemeni President reply to the message he had received from Burns which stressed the care of the US to strengthen partnership with Yemen in the area of fighting terrorism and supporting Yemen in the field of development, training and consolidating security potentials.
