Tunisia, Politics, 1/18/2002
Lawyers of the Tunisian opposition figure Hemma al-Humami who has been living in disguise on Tuesday filed an objection over the sentence in absentia released against him in 1999, stated to jail him for nine years, according to press statements made by the wife of the verdict lawyer Radyah al-Nasrawi.
The lawyers explained that al-Humami protests through this objection to the absentia sentence and says he is ready to get out of his hiding to defend himself.
The lawyers added that the elementary court in Tunis will consider the objection on February 2nd.
Al-Humami ( 49) year old, husband of the Tunisian lawyer and human rights activist Radyah al-Nasrawi has been in hiding since four years when he was sentenced on July 14 1999 for an imprisonment sentence of nine years and three month. Al-Humami leads the Tunisian Communist Labor party ( extreme leftist) which is not recognized by the Tunisian authority. This party, however, is active at the university.
