Terrorist threats against the American embassy in Sanaa
Yemen-USA, Politics, 1/18/2002

The US has suspended its consulate services following " terrorist threats" in Yemen which is launching unprecedented campaign against persons suspected to belong to al-Qaida organization led by Osama Bin Laden.

The American embassy in Sanaa on Tuesday stayed closed, on the wake of Sanaa and Washington's announcement the suspension of consulate services temporarily because of " terrorist threats" might be linked to al-Qaida organization.

A source at the Yemeni police told reporters that the embassy " received on Sunday a telephone call from an unidentified speaker who stressed that the American embassy and interests in Yemen are in danger." The source did not mention any other details.

The spokesman for the US state department Richard Boucher said that the embassy suspended its consulate services after the Yemeni authorities informed it about the increasing danger of operations against the US in Yemen. Boucher added that:" the Yemenis told us they believe there are increasing threats against the US interests in Yemen, but he did not disclose the nature of these threats."

Worthy mentioning that the Yemeni police and army forces have been since weeks chasing persons suspected to belong to al-Qaida organization led by Osama Bin Laden. On December 18, 2001 clashes erupted during chasing of three provinces on the border with Saudi Arabia where mostly tribes which are out of the control of the central authority are settled. The clashes resulted in killing 28 persons including 24 Yemeni soldiers and policemen.
