Mubarak sends message to Morocco's King
Morocco-Egypt, Politics, 1/17/2002

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak sent a message to King Mohammad VI of Morocco. The message dwelt on a number of international issues, especially the situation in the Middle East.

The Moroccan King received the message during a meeting on Wednesday with Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher, currently visiting Morocco.

The meeting was attended by Moroccan Foreign Minister Mohammad Benaissa and Egypt's Ambassador to Morocco Ashraf Za'za.

"The message included an analysis of the situation in the Middle East and the President's desire to boost relations between the two countries in various domains and coordination at regional and international conferences," Maher said.

He added that President Mubarak explained Egypt's viewpoint towards the Israeli practices against the Palestinians, which he said, would not ensure security for the Israeli side.

"In his message, Mubarak stressed the importance of mobilizing Arab and international efforts to stop the Israeli practices and work to pursue peace negotiations with the aim of reaching a just and comprehensive settlement and establishing a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital," said the diplomat.

Maher told MENA after meeting King Mohammad that President Mubarak had been looking forward to meeting the Moroccan King during the proceedings of the Egyptian-Moroccan Higher Committee, which did not convene as scheduled early this month due to the dangerous situation in the Middle East which made it incumbent on President Mubarak to remain in Cairo to follow up developments in Palestine.

The Foreign Minister said that an agreement was reached on holding meetings of the joint committee under President Mubarak and King Mohammad in the first half of 2002. He stressed the importance of holding meetings between the two Arab leaders as soon as possible.

Maher said that his meeting with the Moroccan king touched on the Arab summit and the importance of holding it at the scheduled time and venue, adding that he shared identical views with King Mohammad on the summit.

He said that Egypt and Morocco also shared identical views on the importance of halting Israeli practices which violated international legitimacy, laws and posed a threat to the region.

He called on the United States, Europe and the world public opinion to realise the gravity of the Israeli practices on stability of the region, and strongly express rejection of Israeli aggression on the Palestinians and their leader Yasser Arafat.

Concluding his statements, Maher said that the Moroccan Monarch expressed keenness on strengthening Egyptian-Moroccan relations and stressed the importance of continued coordination between the two countries, adding that he carried back a verbal message to President Mubarak from King Mohammad.

On his part, Egypt's Ambassador to Morocco Ashraf Zaza said Wednesday that the current visit of Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher to Morocco comes within the context of cordial relations binding the two countries.

Zaza, in an interview with Radio Cairo, said that Egypt and Morocco are playing a major role in the Middle East, specially vis-a-vis Jerusalem (al Quds) issue.

He expressed hope that consultations between Egypt and Morocco along with other parties concerned in Europe and the US would help put an end to Israeli provocative policies.
